Know Your Anatomy

Did you know that your spine consists of 33 vertebra?  Did you know that the cervical Spine has the greatest range of motion in all planes and that 50% of that motion comes from the very top two vertebra known as your atlas and your axis? There are 7 vertebra that make up your cervical Spine. Your thoracic spine has the smallest range of motion in all planes but the greatest amount of movement in rotation. The thoracic spine attaches into the ribs and has 12 vertebra. Your low back is your lumbar spine, consisting of 5 vertebra, which attach to your sacrum between your pelvic halves. It's designed for weight bearing, has the most movement in flexion and extension, but the least in rotation. The sacrum is made up of 5 fused vertebra, which connect into your coccyx, or tailbone. The coccyx is also made up of 4 fused vertebra.  Test it out!   Make the moves in your body and see how it feels!

What is the function of the spine? (How many can you come up with?)

Joseph Pilates said, "You are only as young as your spine is flexible."

Why is the PMA important to you as a client?

The Pilates Method Alliance (PMA), is the formal recognition of acceptable professional standards within the Pilates arena.  The PMA certification requires a candidate to provide verification of teacher training proficiency using 450+ hours of training on all apparatus and all levels of mat as a basis. The PMA certified teacher is required to complete 16 hours of continuing education within every two years to maintain and renew their certified status.  PMA certified Pilates teacher creates and implements safe and effective individualized programs. The instructor who has successfully achieved this recognition is awarded the title of Certified Pilates Teacher (CPT).

"In my opinion knowing your Pilates instructor is PMA certified gives you peace of mind and assurance that your instructor has comprehensive knowledge of the Pilates method. You can trust that your teacher will create a personalized, safe, and effective program for you because they have a deep understanding of the Pilates method. You can also rest assured they will never stop learning and improving their skills due to the required continuing education by the PMA." -Anna Marchington, PMA CPT

Cauliflower: The Versatile Veggie

When it comes to nutrients, cauliflower packs a punch! Cauliflower is rich in vitamins and nutrients, high in fiber, and a great source of choline. You might be thinking, "What the heck is choline?" Choline is a macronutrient important for liver function, normal brain development, nerve function, and maintaining metabolism. It's a brain food! (It kind of looks like a brain, too.) Cauliflower is also high in antioxidants, which may reduce inflammation and reduce the risk of certain cancers and heart disease. Since it's high in fiber and water, cauliflower may help in weight loss, too. Bonus! If you're looking for creative ways to eat more veggies, cauliflower is a great substitute for grains and legumes. Happy to help.
